Wilderness First Aid Course

Description: Join TNI to learn the basics of Wilderness First Aid (WFA). This two day intensive course covers essential principles and skills necessary for backcountry and isolated situations. The course is taught by a professional instructor with patient care and backcountry experience from Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA), who have been setting the standard in wilderness medicine for over 30 years.

Cost: $250/members, $270/non-members. Spots are limited.

When: This program runs from May 25-26, 2024 (Memorial Day weekend) from 8 am – 6 pm each day.

Who’s it for: Outdoor enthusiasts, seasonal outdoor staff, recreational wilderness professionals, scout troop leaders, or outdoor professionals.

Course structure: Come prepared to spend a good portion of your day in the great outdoors. This course is largely held outside in real conditions with an emphasis on hands-on activities as opposed to long lectures.

Course Topics: Patient Assessment System; CPR; Circulatory System; Nervous System; Respiratory System; Fractures, Stable Injuries; Splints 1-Extremities; Hypothermia; Hyperthermia and Heat Illness; Near Drowning; Lightning Injuries; Wounds and Burns; Anaphylaxis; Lifting, Moving Extrication; Patient Carries; Backcountry Medicine.

Evaluation: To receive your certification, 100% attendance is required, as well as satisfactory performance on homework assignments and written quizzes, demonstrated proficiency with practical skills, and a successful grade on a final written exam. 

Certification: Upon successful completion, you will be certified in Wilderness First Aid and Adult CPR. Certifications are valid for 3 years at which point you should retake the WFA course or upgrade to Wilderness Advanced First Aid or Wilderness First Responder.

Prerequisites: You must be at least 16 years old to take this course. Students who are under the age of 18 require the written consent of a parent or guardian. No medical or first aid experience is necessary for this course. 

What’s included: All instruction plus a Wilderness First Aid Guide, SOAP Notebook, and The Outward Bound Wilderness First-Aid Handbook.

What’s not included: Meals/snacks, lodging, and transportation.
